Hello Owen!
There are a number of projects lined up currently, including the lunar exploration mission Chandrayaan 3 and the manned space mission Gaganyaan. Via the ‘privatization’, ISRO is looking to nurture private players in the space industry while also focusing on big-ticket missions like manned space travel. According to Dr. K. Sivan, ISRO’s vision for the future of India’s space programme is to make India a global space hub five years from now.
Regarding competing with other major players, we are indeed on the right track. With numerous projects in the pipeline, opening up of the sector to private players and setting up of a conducive policy framework, the space economy is indeed gearing up for big stuff. Given that these major changes are being instituted now, it will take some time, but they will most definitely amplify India’s capabilities. Dr. K. Sivan recently said that India can beat China in some technologies in the future, and in a few years, ISRO can mature to NASA’s level.
